Chapter 6

Ella awoke in her bedroom; having lost all sense of time. Glancing at the clock at the side of her bed, she saw it was 10.30 am. If this were still the same day, it meant that her entire adventure had only lasted half an hour. How can that be she wondered; it had seemed like an eternity.

A knock at her door startled Ella and she glanced down to see if her fish tail had vanished.

“Good morning, sleepy head,” said Ruby. “Just checking you’re okay. You don’t usually sleep in this late.

“Ahh,” yawned Ella, “I had trouble sleeping last night, so I caught up this morning. I’ll be down soon.”

“Okay, Mrs Merrill will make you some breakfast,” smiled Ruby, I’m off out with Adrian. Have a good day Ella.”

“Bye Ruby, see you later.”

Ella sleepily made her way down the stairs ten minutes later. It certainly felt as though she had been up all night.

“Morning Ella,” beamed Mrs Merrill. “Ooh, you look as though you’ve been up all night. Would you like some breakfast?”

“Thank you,” nodded Ella. “I had such vivid dreams last night, it’s as though everything actually happened.”

“Vivid dreams you say. Always a sign of a good imagination and most dreams have a hidden meaning you know. We’ll have to sit down and look through my dream book together sometime.” Heaving her ample frame around the kitchen, Mrs Merrill chatted away; as the delicious smell of bacon wafted past Ella’s nose, (making her tummy grumble). Thank goodness I don’t have to eat prawns and seaweed all the time she thought, glad to be back in the castle.

“Still making the headlines you know, the disappearance of Queen Valencia’s jewels,” said Mrs Merrill, ladling creamy scrambled egg onto Ella’s plate. “The police think the jewels are in England. It’s just a matter of time before the thief is caught. I can’t believe they think they can get away with it, after all who wears tiaras these days, hardly the kind of thing you wear to do the shopping, is it?”

Ella glanced at the picture on the front page of the newspaper. It was the tiara she had seen with Sophie, hidden in the secret passageway. Wow! Mrs Merrill would be amazed I told her I knew where it is, she thought.

“Mmm - that was wonderful. I’ll see you later,” said Ella, giving Mrs Merrill a hug. “I’m going to see if Sophie wants to go to the beach.”

A little later Ella and Sophie sat on the beach, licking ice-lolly’s and trying to keep cool, as Ella recounted her adventure.

“Wow! That sounds amazing. I wish I’d been there,” said Sophie, enviously. Please say I can be with you for your next adventure?”

“Of course, but we’ve got another problem to solve. How to prove that Adrian’s a thief, before Ruby marries him,” sighed Ella. “I’ve been thinking that we probably don’t have to visit the local library. Surely the castle library would have information on its history.”

“Yes.” said Sophie. “But wouldn’t Ruby
